OMG, WHAT IS IT WITH MY LUCK LATELY? They’re showing Vertigo at the cinema here this week, I’m definitely going and that would make it the second Hitchcock film I’ve seen on the big screen THIS MONTH, there’s definitely something fishy about this and this streak of luck in regard to old Hollywood films can’t possibly last much longer, but whatever, I’m too happy *O*

Also, the cinema they’re showing it at was built in the 20’s and looks like this (minus photoshopped screen):

MGM dropped me right back into the vamp mold, loaning me to RKO for Thirteen Women. I methodically murder all the white schoolmates who had patronized me. Betty Furness had started at RKO doubled for my hands in closeups when I was busy elsewhere. She’d been dropped from the film. “You were lucky.” I told her. “Because I just would have killed you, too.” The only one who had escaped me in that picture was Irene Dunne, I regretted it every time she got the parts I wanted.

Hi there ! lovely blog =) I just saw your Jean Arthur birthday post and that first picture of her as a child is new to me ! She looks so cute. I was wonderling where you found it, and if you would mind posting a full version. Thank you so much.

Aww, thanks Anon, I’m really glad you like it 😀

The picture is from Vermilye’s book on Jean, here’s a link to the preview of the book on google books, the photo is on page 2. Fun fact: it was taken by Jean’s father, who was a photographer.

And here it is uncropped:

“My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.”

The film was shot in eight weeks, and required no retakes. During the scene where James Stewart hiccups when drunk, you can see Cary Grant looking down and grinning. Since the hiccup wasn’t scripted, Grant was on the verge of breaking out laughing and had to compose himself quickly. James Stewart thought of hiccuping in the drunk scene himself, without telling Cary Grant. When he began hiccuping, Grant turned to Stewart saying, “Excuse me.” The scene required only one take.

“I was going to be an architect. I graduated with a degree in architecture and I had a scholarship to go back to Princeton and get my Masters in architecture. I’d done theatricals in college, but I’d done them because it was fun.”

When filming the long shot of his prayer in It´s A Wonderful Life (1946), Stewart was so moved, he began sobbing for real. Rather than risk losing the intensity by shooting additional takes, director Frank Capra created close-ups by enlarging frames of the long shot.

“I found out so many more things about him that were charming—of course, he is adorable—but he was so interesting and understanding. That became more appealing to me. I sat on the set once more and he recited ‘If I Were King’ for me—just for me.” Jean Arthur on Ronald Colman
