Have you figured out who could play Brienne in your ASOIAF fan cast?

I have thought of a few options, but none of them convinces me 100% because obviously nobody with Brienne’s physique would get hired in old Hollywood, unfortunately, but at the same time it’s such an important aspect of her character that I can’t really leave it out. Usually I like to keep things secret until I do the fancast post, but in this case I guess I’ll share my options so you guys can give me your opinion and maybe help me decide.

Option 1: Jean Arthur

I’m biased towards this one because Jean is one of my favourite people ever, and she could get across that feeling of awkwardness that Brienne tends to have. Of course, she’s way too pretty, but that’s the case for all of the potential Briennes.

Option 2: Miriam Hopkins

The problem here is that Miriam is very short and petite, and if you’ve seen any of her films you really get that impression.

Option 3: Margaret Sullavan

Ok, I’ll be honest, this is mostly because of that one pool photo.

And then there’s this:

This would solve the height problem since Ingrid was rather tall, but at the same time she’s probably the most conventionally attractive of the bunch. Also I think I might use her for some other character too.

So, what do you think? Would any of these work?

Not sure if you are still working on the Old Hollywood ASOIAF fancasts, but if you are, could I recommend Rita Moreno as either Ellaria Sand or Arianne Martell? I really think she could nail the dangerous intelligence and sensuality of either women.

I’m not super familiar with Rita Moreno’s work (her career started at the very of of what I consider the classic Hollywood era) but I’ll keep the suggestion in mind! I already have a few ideas for Arianne and Ellaria but I’m not 100% sure about either (especially the Arianne one, since the actress I’m thinking of never really worked in Hollywood). Thanks!

Re: Aegon, Visenya, and Rhaenys fancasts: Well, Visenya and Rhaenys were pretty different from one another. Maybe it is appropriate that they look decades apart? Also Visenya died much later than Rhaenys did

Yes, I thought of the thing about Rhaenys dying soon as well, it could work. I guess the thing is that I feel 50s Rhaenys would be more fitting/better received but I personally prefer the 30s one. With Visenya I’m way more partial to the 50s actress, so I might do them in order of birth (v->a->r) so I have more time to choose a Rhaenys?

is your classic hollywood actors strictly supposed to be from hollywood? because i think bollywood actress mumtaz or sharmila tagore are perfect for arianne!

Hi! The reason I chose to make it an old Hollywood fancast as opposed to just an old cinema one was essentially because it’s easier for me. Seriously, I’m reeeeally ignorant when it comes to non-American classic films (and I shouldn’t be, like, my own country is somewhat famous for having produced Good Classic Films and I’ve seen maybe 4 of them, I suck), so it just makes it easier for me to know who to cast and where to find the right footage (or just to find footage at all, really). But this self-imposed rule makes things harder for some characters, especially the Martells, since old Hollywood was a racist shit hole, so I’ve been tempted to break it (there’s one particular Mexican actress who would be great for Arianne imo, but she’s only ever starred in Mexican films so I’m torn). Back to your suggestions, a young Sharmila Tagore would be a perfect Arianne actually (Mumtaz has a sweeter look, more Elia-like imo). Seriously, look at this:

So I might consider breaking the pattern 🙂 I would need to watch some of her films and educate myself about old Bollywood a little first though.

Joan Crawford in ‘Paid’ has a certain fierce quality that can be applied to Arya, and Veronica Lake has an ethereal quality that can be applied to Dany. Of course, these are only suggestions :)

(I’m assuming you’re the same anon as before) Joan in Paid could totally work.image I was also thinking maybe Sylvia Sidney in some of her roles? (she doesn’t look much like book!Arya and I’m probably thinking about her because she bears a resemblance to Maisie. Still, even if she doesn’t work for Arya I’d still like to use Sylvia for somebody, she just has a great face). I’ve already casted Veronica Lake as Cersei and I’d rather not do repeats. I’m starting to warming up to the idea of another actress for Dany but like…this particular actress I’m thinking of has one of the saddest stories ever and I’m not sure if I want to deal with the implications.

Well, Sansa is also a child, she’s only 13. So I don’t see how aging Arya up as you did Sansa would be a problem :D Again, your old hollywood fancasts are absolutely lovely

Yes, I mentioned that, but I don’t know, somehow it just feels more natural to age up Sansa (or Marg) than Arya? Also Moira Shearer could pass for younger than she was in most of the pics I used (she was 22 in almost all of them I think), so there’s that. But hey, I might just do a grownup!Arya like I intend to do with the more “”doomed”” children. (Thank you again <3)

Your asoiaf old hollywood fancast is amazing! will you be doing one for Daenerys Targaryen, Arya Stark, and Jon Snow?

Thank you anon, I’m glad you like it 😀 I haven’t decided on a fancast for those three yet (well, I have an idea for Jon but I’m not 100% sure about it), but I will definitely do them as soon as I can think of something. Arya is the most difficult one among these three because she’s a child (well, Dany and Jon are teens as well but I think it would still work if I aged them up a bit as I did for Sansa and Margaery) and there weren’t many (decent) child actors in old Hollywood. I found one for Shireen but Virginia Weidler is basically one of two or three o.h. child actors I can stomach, so it’s a bit different. Still, if I manage to find a match I will definitely do one for her  🙂 (suggestions are always, always welcome)

Hello Lauri, I’m researching Moira Shearer. Do you recall where you found the image of her with the veil and guipure lace? Thanks Dai

Hi! It’s a screencap from The Red Shoes, it’s the scene at the train station and you can find that particular shoot at around 43:34 as you can see here:

(the quality is awful here because I moved my hd version to my external drive and I’m not at home at the moment, if you need an hd cap let me know and I can get you one tomorrow evening or on Tuesday 🙂 )
